In North America there is a standardized system for regulators & tanks that deal with compressed air. Tanks and regulators that fall under this system have a CGA number. CGA stands for Compressed Gas Association which was formed shortly after a man by the name Robert King sent out a letter, in 1913, requesting that the manufactures of compressed gasses meet in New York to set a standard. This Standard is what prevents you from mixing up your Oxygen and Acetylene hose lines and also what prevents certain regulators from attaching to certain tanks. You can find this number on your tank near where the regulator would mount to the tank. On the regulator this number is usually stamped on the nut that screws into the tank. For Example the average acetylene tank will say CGA-510. The 510 number is only used for represents the thread pattern which is 0.825 inch O.D. with14 threads per inch. 510 is not the only number for acetylene, CGA-200, CGA-300, CGA-520, all of these are other types of bottles and regulators. Tanks with CGA-200 valves are the smaller tanks also known as “MC” tanks. The 90° angle allows for the regulator to be adjusted to fit nicely if you tank valve is set at that odd angle.
